Each decision and mechanical structure fits together like a puzzle piece and results in exciting, tense battles and adventures. It is so good, in fact, that I have difficulty imagining that another game in this particular niche will exceed it. There are not a lot of games in the deck builder/turn-based tactical RPG space, but Trials of Fire is the one that I think is the best. The game is tense and unique and this combination of factors easily pushes it into my top 5 for the year. Combat is dice-based, and how those dice evolve and related “push-your-luck” elements make it fun and engaging, even in situations where it isn’t strictly necessary. The challenges are distinct and escalating, with failure due to running out of food and sanity a constant threat. Top 5 of 2021 5. ![]() Even with that being the case, the best of 2021 can stand with titles released in any other year, and with the number of new turn-based tactical games that are announced for 2022, it looks like 2021 was more of a lull rather than a sign of a permanent decline. We’d expect more quality titles when there are more games in general. This is not a huge surprise as 2021 saw far fewer games hit the market. Its strength was largely concentrated on a few very good releases, rather than a plethora of merely good releases like we saw previously. ![]() With 2021 coming to an end, I have to say that it was a good year for turn-based tactical games… but not a great one. ![]()
